  • Rescinding endorsement of state's attorney Don Knapp adopted at Trades & Labor Oct 7, 2020
    Posted On: Oct 08, 2020

Motion: To Amend the previously adopted Endorsement of Don Knapp for McLean Co State’s Attorney

Whereas the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protect the freedom of speech, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances, and

Whereas Section (d) of the Declaration of Principles of the Bloomington-Normal Trades and Labor Assembly of the AFL-CIO of McLean Co. states as principle of the Body “to propose, support, and promote legislation favorable to and to oppose legislation detrimental to the interest of workers and organized labor,” and

Whereas these rights and principles are the foundation of the American Labor Movement and protect us and our loved ones when Labor determines the need to conduct collective protest or job action, and

Whereas Don Knapp in his role as States Attorney has explicitly & implicitly advocated for an ordinance or law (known as ‘Chapter 305’) to diminish these rights by levying both criminal charges and fines on organizations or individuals who seek to protest in the city of Blooomington in the County of McLean, Illinois without 30-60 days prior approval from local authorities, and

Whereas as motion to endorse Mr. Knapp for State’s Attorney passed through this Body on September 2nd 2020, without knowledge or discussion of Knapp’s position on this ordinance, and

Whereas a motion to table a vote on adopting Chapter 305 passed County Board committee by a motion of 5-2 on Sep 3rd 2020, and

Whereas endorsements by this body are an extension of the values for which we stand, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED that the Bloomington-Normal Trades and Labor Assembly AFL-CIO of McLean Co do hereby rescind it’s endorsement of Don Knapp for McLean Co States Attorney, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Bloomington-Normal Trades and Labor Assembly AFL-CIO of McLean Co will

    1. Within two (2) work days post a copy of this resolution in its entirety with date of adoption to
